A Photo a Day: My Daily Sustenance, Day 53

The road is not just closed; it doesn't exist right now.  Beyond that was the Jackson Street bridge that spanned White River.  Winter prevents further work on the building of the new bridge.  So...we await spring.

A Photo a Day: My Daily Sustenance, Day 22

Here's my shovel, ready for action!  So far this winter my broom has been enough to sweep a path to my car and ridding my car of the fluffy, white snow.  I know this won't last, but one can only hope.  As I've stated before, I love the purifying look that snow lays on the landscape, but I hate the threatening of my car sliding and my slipping and falling to the hardness of my driveway or a store's parking lot.  However, snow is part of Indiana winters.  Safe walking and driving to you all living in our wintery world!

A Photo a Day: My Daily Sustenance, Day 4

Birds and squirrels are hungry!  I find myself feeling that way more often in the winter.

Experiencing the Senses of Winter

Smells of winter:
 Wood burning in a fireplace
Chili cooking on a stove
Hot cocoa or mulled cider steaming in a mug
Fresh Christmas tree
Pumpkin bread baking in the oven

Sights of winter:
Snow piled high on the road sides
Icicles hanging from eaves and trees
Slush on sidewalks
Reflections of Christmas tree lights in windows
People rushing, seeking shelter and its warmth
Cars abandoned because of ice and snow storms
Birds clamoring at feeders
Scarves hiding frigid faces
Skis on top of cars heading for slopes
Wine goblets being toasted as the new year rings in
Confetti flittering down in Time Square greeting revelers on New Year’s Eve
People getting jumps for their dead batteries
Sleds racing down snow covered hills
Streetlights covered with holiday garlands
Snow blowers
Snowmobiles racing across fields
Footprints left by people and animals in
the snow
Boots trudging through snow drifts

Sounds of winter:
Whine of snowmobiles
Roar of snow blowers
Chug of snow plows
Crackling of fire in the fireplace
Teeth chattering in the cold
Zipping of coats
Drone of a tow truck loading a vehicle to its hook
Carols being sung
Slurp of a warm liquid being drunk

Touches of winter:
Scratchiness of a wool scarf on my neck
Heat from a fireplace
Tongue being scorched by a beverage
Frigidness of ice
Smoothness of icicles
Squishiness of pumpkin bread in my mouth

Tastes of winter:
Tartness of mulled cider
Chocolaty sweetness of hot chocolate
Spiciness of chili
Saltiness of crackers munched in chili
Gooiness of cheese dripping from my soup spoon

Ice Storm

View of my car through ice on my storm door

Looking out my kitchen window

I wonder, "Will it come back in the spring?"

Same door, different time of day

Hm, my swing isn't inviting me to sit there right now.

This photo and the next two were taken on a day that rained most of the day; then it snowed; then we had sleet.

This winter has provided me with ample opportunities for taking aim with my camera.  It's exciting for me to share my renewed interest in photography.

ICE STORM 2011

frozen bush
still hangin' in there
reflections on frozen car window
beautiful, but dangerous ice

What kind of bird?  Orchard Oriole?  I've never seen one before.

I'm sharing photos I've snapped this week through my kitchen window, storm door, and just outside my door.  Desiring  close-up shots of ice on surfaces, I tucked my cell phone into my coat, put shoes with the best tread and went outside.  S  l  o  w  l  y  easing down the steps, I shuffled along to get up close and personal shots of the tree, bush and car.
Thankfully, I cautiously and without mishap entered my cozy and toasty home.

Playing with Light and Shadows

After visiting several photography blogs that I enjoyed yesterday, I decided to try my hand at playing.  When I was a kid, I did that easily without thinking about it.  I just did it!  It's sad that I have to ponder so heavily now before doing an acitivity that once was as natural as breathing.  I'm certainly no expert, but I'm satisfied with my results.   Thank you, Lord, for the winter sunlight and snow.

An Acrostic Poem about Snow

When I came in from sweeping the snow off my deck and my car and made a path to the mailbox, I felt a poem rattling around my head.  Seeking the simple kind of poem, I reached down inside for an acrostic poem.

Snow, white fluffy snow...
Nestling under the comfy throw.
Outside is bright and beautiful to behold.
Winter is here, no matter what the calendar has told!
